I HATE WEEVILS!!!!!

About a month ago, we started seeing a few black weevils crawling around on our walls and ceiling. Occasionally, I would notice these little creatures in our cupboards. As weeks progressed, I started "removing" around 50 weevils a day. (no exaggeration) I did some minor research and learned that weevils love flour, noodles, cereal, and other grain products. I also learned that you should inspect all your grain products and find where the weevils have nested. Apparently once weevils lay their eggs, it only takes one month for the eggs to mature into fully grown adults. (gross gross, and gross).

So about two weeks ago, I spent the entire morning and afternoon clearing out our cupboards and inspecting. What I discovered was disgusting; three boxes of lasagna noodles infested with around 300 weevils, a box of ziti noodles filled with lovely black pests, and several packages of spaghetti noodles destroyed. GRRRR. You don't mess with my precious noodles!


I immediately removed the infested food products from the apartment and washed out the cabinets. My parents suggested putting spearmint gum into the flour and noodles. I took their advice and even placed sticks of gum throughout the cupboards!

Over the next few days, a few weevils appeared that I would immediately send on a water ride down our sink! I assumed these few stragglers were looking for the nest that I had removed and would eventually die.


OH WAS I WRONG.

This morning, I found more infested noodles. UGGGGHHHH!!! Stupid Stupid Weevils. Altogether, I have probably thrown away around 40 dollars worth of food, mostly noodles.

Right now, I need a fountain diet coke with extra extra ice, some chocolate, cafe rio, and some of that delicious roast that my mom is making on the vacation I am missing for the first time in 10 years. What a morning!!

Our first year of marriage.

Well we survived our first year of marriage. And if the first year is supposed to be the hardest, I think we have a great life ahead of us!

Powderpuff, Josh's final football game, and another pig roast.

Yesterday was a busy busy day for us. All morning Josh was helping our friends re-dig the pit for another pig roast, picking the pig up from the farm, and getting everything ready to start roasting around 1pm. I was busy at home making rolls for the feast and finishing homework. Josh's last intramural football game started at 3:30pm and my game started at 5pm. So we were both up at the field before 3 warming up. Our friend Cort was tending to the pig until we were done playing.

Josh's game didn't start out well. A couple of dropped passes and long throws discouraged the team. Then an awful call was made that set the tone for the rest of the game. A few moments after our quarterback, Bin, said hike and even threw the ball, we hear a whistle in the back field. One of the referees thought he saw a penalty but there wasn't one. By that time, Bin had thrown the ball for a touchdown to a receiver that was wide open. So everyone on the defense argued that the play is dead when the whistle is blown even though the touchdown would have happened anyway because the receiver was wide open. Offense of course argued that the whistle was blown by mistake and the receiver was wide open anyway. Long story short, we didn't get the touchdown and the down was replayed. This bad call decided the game because the 4th semesters lost 12-14. Losing wasn't the best way to end the season but last year the boys didn't even make it to the final game so I guess they can be grateful to have made it that far! (sorry there are no pictures of Josh's game... I was too nervous about my game to think about taking pictures!)

Onto Powderpuff! Firstly, it is interesting to me how nasty girls get when playing football. I don't think boys ever play quite as "dirty" as girls do. A single aggressive hit or smack in the face sends a flash of rage through the entire team. What is that about?! Anyway, I was one of two quarterbacks. How powderpuff works here is 1st and 2nd semesters form a team to play against a 3rd and 4th semester team. The senior team is expected to win which I think contributes to this rage I have been talking about! The game was a lot of fun and pretty competitive. After a lot of dirty blocks, choking calls on the other team, shoulder drops when blocking, tackles during flag football, several "almost" punches thrown, scratching of the face, and a lot of screaming, we won 12-19! It was a lot of fun minus the nasty bruise I have on my butt and foot and the goose egg on my head that I don't remember getting! Maybe I will play again next semester.

After we showered up, we headed over to our friend's house for the 2nd and probably final pig roast. This roast was even better than the first. The pig was much larger (around 130 lbs) and the meat was SO good. I made a sandwich with the meat and I swear I was eating the freshest Arby's sandwich ever! Weird huh!? I didn't take any picture (sorry) but the boys were behaving quite similarly to before. Something about cooking meat over a fire really gets these boys going!!

We have our Championship softball game today so more later!

Football Playoffs and Banquet

Josh's intramural football team won their game against 2nd semester securing their position in the finals on Friday. It was an intense game because 4th and 2nd semester are full of tension from a previous game. My blood pressure was soaring because a few 2nd semester guys took some cheap shots at Josh. I even ran on the field a few times!! You don't mess with my husband! Friday will be their last game. Josh will have to play with his own semester after that. I am playing powder puff this semester. I am taking a stab at quarterbacking. I will have Josh take pictures!

The Punishers On Saturday, we attended the fourth semester banquet. I know what you are thinking... we aren't fourth semester yet! But it was free food and the majority of our friends down here are in fourth semester. So why not! We had a blast. We ate lots of great food, danced, and socialized with our friends. It is really nice to have one night where everyone isn't worried about studying or taking a test and we can just let loose. Refreshing.

Another party and more.

On Monday, we attended a surprise party for Minh, one of Josh's friends from Miami and our neighbor here in Dominica. Jaspheron, another Merp friend, organized the entire event and asked if I would make the cake. I was nervous because I didn't have anything to decorate the cake with. When I was in Roseasu last week, I found a really cheap cake decorating set and some fun food coloring. So, I did my best! Besides, you can't really go wrong with sugar and chocolate!!

These pictures are from Josh's actual birthday. I made steak, twice baked potatoes, and vegetables. Then for dessert, I made these delicious cupcakes with my new decorating tools and food coloring! Josh even ate an entire cupcake!! I am not bragging but they are so good.

Josh's Surprise Birthday Party!

I just had to smash cake in his face!

For two weeks, I planned a surprise party for Josh's birthday. Since Josh took a semester off for us to get married, he is a semester behind most of his friends he met in Miami. We don't get to see them nearly as often as we would like. So I thought a surprise party would be a great opportunity for everyone to get together. I started the arrangements by hacking into Josh's school account to get his friends email addresses. I spent two weeks tip-toeing around, secretly communicating with his friends, ordering a cake, arranging transportation for everyone, making reservations and in some cases "making up stories" so Josh's won't suspect anything! I hated telling Josh white lies but it was for a good cause, right!?!

I scheduled the party for last weekend because his actual birthday is the day before their second exam. I figured more people would be able to attend. In fact, I largely underestimated how loved Josh is and how many people would take time away from studying to celebrate his birthday. 26 people to be exact!

Everyone, except for Courtney, Andy, Josh and I, met at the school at 5:30pm. Our driver, Ren, piled everyone into two buses and began the 30 minute drive to the restaurant. I arrange for a taxi to take the four of us to the restaurant at 6:00pm. Josh knew we were going to the restaurant with Andy and Courtney, he just didn't know that most of his friends from Merp would be there too!!!

We arrived at the restaurant with no one in sight. For a minute, I was worried something happened along the way. A table for 20 was even set up in the restaurant but where was everyone? We sat at another table for a few minutes until a herd of cheerful people came running in. I thought Josh was going to have a heart attack! I was impressed how many people actually came. Josh has made some really great friends where ever he goes.

To make a long story short, it was a great evening. The food was nice, cake was great, and it was wonderful having everyone together for Josh's birthday. He said it was the nicest thing I have ever done for him. I thought getting married was pretty nice but what do I know!!! :)
